Is My Solar Quote Fair? A Guide for Irish Homeowners
What does a typical solar installation cost in Ireland?
A typical 4 kWp solar PV system (10–12 panels) installed by an SEAI-registered contractor in Ireland costs between €7,000 and €10,000 including VAT. After the SEAI grant of €1,800 and the 0% VAT benefit, your out-of-pocket cost is typically €5,200–€8,200. Prices vary by location, roof type, system complexity, and installer.
What should be included in your quote?
A fair and complete solar quote should include:
- The number of panels, their brand, and power output per panel (e.g. 400W)
- The inverter brand and model
- Scaffolding and all installation labour
- Grid connection application (ESBN NC6 form — your installer handles this)
- SEAI grant application support
- System commissioning and handover documentation
- An estimate of expected annual generation in kWh
Red flags in a solar quote
Watch out for these warning signs:
- No mention of the SEAI grant or VAT rate (you should see 0% VAT on the invoice)
- Pressure to sign quickly or pay a large deposit before grant approval
- Panel brands or installer not recognised — check SEAI's registered contractor list
- No estimated annual generation figures
- Unusually low price with vague scope — may mean cut-rate components
- Quote does not include scaffolding separately
Tips for getting a fair price
Get at least three quotes from SEAI-registered installers. Use the SEAI registered contractor list (hes.seai.ie) to verify registration. Ask each installer for their projected annual generation estimate — a reputable installer will provide this. Do not pay more than 10–15% deposit before the grant is approved. Prices should generally be lower in Q1 and Q4 when demand is lower.
