Panel cleaning and maintenance

Good news: in Ireland, you rarely need to clean your panels. Our frequent rainfall does the job for you. Studies show Irish panels lose less than 2% output per year to soiling under normal rainfall conditions.

When you do need to clean: After an unusually dry summer period (rare, but happened in 2022 and 2023). If birds have been roosting on your roof. If you notice a significant output drop vs. the same period last year (check your inverter app).

How to clean safely: Use a soft brush on a telescopic pole and warm water. Never use abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or a high-pressure washer — these can scratch panels and damage seals. Do not walk on the roof unless you are trained to do so safely.

Professional cleaning: For two-storey homes, hiring a window cleaner with experience of solar panels costs €80–€150. Worth doing every 2–3 years if your roof is bird-prone.
